Chapter 34: Cartoon Fairies

First of all, I'd like to say Kudos to anyone who has made it this far in my book (Even if the only reason they read it was because they were really bored. In this chapter, I'll be telling you about cartoon fairies. I know what some of you are thinking: Fairies? That's for girly girls. Well, that my be so, but they're surprisingly popular in our pop culture society. From fantasy worlds in which fairies are common to fairytales in which a fairy appears as a kind of miraculous appearance, to cameo appearances on cartoon shows, fairies have appeared many, many times in our entertainment history. In one way or another, I think all of us have come to appreciate fairies, from the blue fairy from Pinnochio to Disney's Tinkerbelle, to the Fairly Oddparents, which has run almost nine or ten years now.         Well, that's all for now. As you can tell, Fairies have been used in a variety of roles, including friend, enemy, sidekick, power source, and even superhero in cases such as The Winx Club or W.I.T.C.H. On the other hand, warriors are way, way, way cooler. What ARE fairies exactly? They're essentially defined as (to put it simply) small creatures with magical powers. However, the more traditional fairies have wings on their backs and either live in the forest or in a magical kingdom. Anyway, here are the 20 facts for this chapter:

1. The Ripping Friends was a really strange and bazaar cartoon show. In one episode, a villain met a magical fairy who lives in his butt. Clearly, the writers of the series were smoking a narcotic.

2. The Stump Fairy from Dave the Barbarian somehow assumed the throne after Lula couldn't be yanked out of the stump.

3. In spite of the fact that Pinnochio was produced first with its Blue Fairy, Tinker Belle is undeniably the most popular cartoon fairy in Disney animated history, probably because she looks cuter in a skirt.

4. The most common referrence to a fairy in a cartoon show is a fairy godmother. It's seen much more often than a fantasy warrior theme.

5. Glitter is one of the hottest, strongest fairies to be unexpectedly introduced, gaining superhuman powers when she sneezes, and dressing in one of the outfits most appropriate for the 80s.

6. In Fairly Oddparents, the fairies explode from excess magical energy if they don't grant wishes.

7. Leprechauns are some of the most well-known examples of fairies, and a popular theory is that they draw their magic from their pot of gold.

8. Wikipedia considers The Smurfs to be Fairies even though only Papa Smurf and occasionally Brainy know how to use magic.

9. Maleficent may have been the scariest or else coolest fairy in animated history, but she still got her dragon-morphing butt handed to her by a trio of short old ladies in dresses, not to mention a prince who got lucky throwing his sword.

10. Even when a fairy godmother is not involved, fairies are most often involved in granting wishes, such as the Star Fairies from the Hanna Barbara movie.

11. The Fairy Godmother from Shrek 2 didn't actually grant any of Fiona's wishes since she had her own agenda. Not really important, but she couldn't really have called herself her fairy godmother in that case.

12. Garfield had a fairy godfather who actually acted like a stereotypical gangster, stealing things like lasagna and money in order to grant his wishes.

13. Popeye The Sailor Man once had a fairy godfather (Who looked suspiciously like Poopdeck Pappy, by the way) who's method of changing Popeye into a prince charming involved (naturally) a can of spinach.

14. The Technical Fairy from Private Snafu was usually there to instill Private Snafu with some moral sense, but in one episode, he encouraged Snafu to "Goldbrick", and then yanked off his face to reveal himself as a Japanese dignitary (Hey, nobody said propaganda cartoons were pretty). In that episode, he was referred to as "The Goldbrick".

15. The Technical Fairy's most notable achievement was turning Private Snafu into a superhero who would be known as "Snafuperman". However, he also once turned Private Snafu into the leader of his camp. Both of which, G. I. Shmo naturally screwed up.

16. The Fairies from Wizards defied most stereotypes, by being vicious and scary, particularly after their king was killed by Blackwolf's henchmen.

17. In an episode of Samurai Jack, he meets a fairy who could only grant one wish is her entire life. Jack makes no effort to solve the situation of the fairy being magically trapped in a sphere by a through magical cunning and instead gets his hand trapped in the sphere and kills the gargoyle without learning how to open the sphere. This leads to the usual irony of Jack not getting back to the past as he wishes that he and the fairy were free.

18. Betty Boop played a fairy in an episode called "Baby be good", in which she tried to warn a small child about the error of his ways and, failing that, undid all his actions by turning back time.

19. Kid Icarus is a pint-sized digital version of Green Arrow, except much worse dressed, way more annoying... Okay, there are a lot more differences than similarities, but they both used only trick arrows instead of things like fairy dust or martial arts. I mean, what's the point of shooting an arrow which requires two arms, two hands, and exceptional aim if you could just take out a bomb and chuck it at your enemy? Is it supposed to look cool or something?

20. As near as I could tell, in The Winx Club, the females go to a fairy school where they learn reality-altering magical powers (Kind of a cross between Harry Potter and Tinker Belle), while the males go to a school where they learn to be brave and noble heroes. Based on that scenario, which of the two do you think has the better deal? Never mind.

Well, that's all for now. Be sure to check out my next chapter for more fun facts.
